November 1 Corinthians 1: 1-9
• What four attributes of God does Paul reference?
• What eight things does Paul say about Jesus?
• What eight things does Paul say about the faith community?
Digging in. Who is Sosthenes? – Acts 18: 12-17. Do you think this is the same man of 1Corinthians? Why does Paul mention Sosthenes?

That's a lot of info for a short passage! *attributes about God Gracious Inviting Faithful *about Jesus Path to salvation Redeemer *about faith community Enriched with speech and knowledge Not lacking in spiritual gifts Kept firm Sanctified
Study notes suggest Sosthenes was Paul's Secretary; to whom he dictated the letter.

All who are looking and interested please don't be shy. Our first questions on Paul and 1 Corinthians may seem elementary, but we are just getting started.
As an introduction to the letter Paul is laying out some very interesting theology. Ideas about God and how God works in the world that tells us how Paul views his ministry and how he sees God.
Remember Paul was Roman and Jewish. He was heavily involved in persecuting Christians before his conversion. What comes in to play here? Where is Paul getting his authority. This is important to establish as Paul addresses divisions in the church. When reviewing the attributes of God and Christ listed in the introduction of our letter what do you learn about Paul and yourself?
Reading Acts 18: 12-17 Who is attacking Paul? Why? Who is defending Paul? Why is Sosthenes attacked? If Sosthenes is the same mentioned in 1 Corinthians why is it important to mention him? How would you imagine Sosthenes was influenced and changed to go from Acts to 1 Corinthians?
In evaluating you faith journey what kind of changes of thought, direction, attitude, understandings have you experiences. How have those changes affected your ability to live in God's word and grace?
What are your goals for this study?

MCSheila pulls out sanctification and faithfulness from the attributes or characteristics of God and Christ. How do you understand those two working together in your understanding of God's love and grace?

I love what Paul is saying here. Defining God as faithful and that through Jesus Christ we will be found blameless. That is huge! Paul is saying it is through Jesus. It is through the actions of God that we are sanctified. It is so hard for us to accept that something free can be good. We have heard too often there is no free lunch. Instead it is a free heavenly banquet and a life in freedom from trying to secure love from God by our own actions. It has already been done for us. We usher in a life of joyful response in how we live and interact. Hard to comprehend-yes! A wonderful way to live- absolutely!
